How to Teach Homeschool Math:
Valuable Resources for the Home School Curriculum

"I thought Saxon was supposed to be so good. All my home school friends had gone on and on about it so I was surprised when my son that loves math, hated it after just a few weeks. I was new to homeschooling and I attended my first homeschool conference in May. It was wonderful.

"There I met a speaker named Mark Wahl and attended three of his lectures. He is skeptical of Saxon and he made some very convincing arguments. He made me think math was fun for those three hours that I listened to him and I HATE MATH. He has a book called A Mathematical Mystery Tour: Higher Thinking Math Tasks… there is a whole years worth of wonderful math mysteries you could supplement your child’s math work with or use by itself.

"He also wrote Math for Humans Teaching Math Through 8 Intelligences, a must-have wonderful book... in there he describes a home schooled child that would be very happy plodding away through Saxon (the beaver) and for that child Saxon might not be so bad but not for the rest. I have a friend that has been homeschooling for 16 years...using only Saxon...her kids score well on standardized testing, high in everything but math. I have very mixed feelings about it after listening to Mark Wahl...I think I will be trying another approach this year..."

NEED A SPEAKER FOR HOMESCHOOLING ORGANIZATION,
PARENT GROUP, OR CONFERENCE?

Mark Wahl's homeschool math workshops and presentations are dynamic and interactive. One form they can take is a general motivational presentation. This can enthuse parents with the possibilities of teaching in new ways and with a greater variety of math teaching strategies.

Another form is to go into depth and detail in a series of three to six sessions lasting three hours apiece so that parents can feel much more comfortable with the many aspects of home school math and how to teach it effectively. Classes can be customized to the specific levels of experience in the group as well as to the specific age levels parents are dealing with. Mark is very sensitive to the math-anxious parent, so don't be afraid to attend and grow!

Here are some sample topics for each 2 to 3-hour presentation:

What is "quality mathematics" and how do you know when your home schooled child is doing it?

How you can convey key concepts like place value, math facts (tables), the true meaning of the plus, minus, times, and divide operations, fraction savvy, decimal deftness, negative numbers, etc., and problem solving thinking so that children have a "gut" sense of them rather than superficial memorized "bytes."

Fun activities that stimulate interest, involve the body, feelings and mind, and broaden the concept of "What is mathematics?"

How you can, at your level of expertise, deepen homeschool  math lessons and make them more fun, more colorful, regardless of what "series" or "materials" you are currently using.

How you can sketch out the unique learning style and intelligences of your child and adapt your materials or lessons according to your findings.

Resources and the factors that important in choosing them to help you with the many math concerns homeschoolers commonly have.

The more you pinpoint the specific ages and needs the parents are dealing with , the more specific the examples and problems that Mark can use. Mark asks for a briefing by one or more of the participants in advance of the presentation so that the most effective use of time can be made.

COSTS: The fee for each workshop is negotiated individually based on length, degree of customization, distance of travel, funding sources, and other specific circumstances. Even if funds are very limited there are creative solutions possible.
